Maruti strike turns violent, five injured

Bangalore: The labour unrest at Maruti Suzuki's Manesar plant took an ugly turn when a group of supervisors were attacked on their way to work. Five of them sustained injuries.

According to this report, the incident took place this morning when a group of 11 supervisors were stopped on their way to work by a group of people near the factory of Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India's Manesar plant and were allegedly attacked.

"A medical examination of two injured employees is being carried out now and an FIR will be filed after that," said a police official.

The MSI management and workers have been locked in a standoff since August 29, when the management prevented workers from entering the factory premises unless they signed a 'good conduct' bond, after alleged sabotage and deliberate compromise on the quality of cars being produced. The management on the other hand sent a tough stand saying this strike was politically motivated.

In support of their colleagues at MSI's Manesar plant, workers at three factories operated by two of Japan's Suzuki Motor Corp's subsidiaries located in the Gurgaon-Manesar industrial belt -- Suzuki Powertrain India Ltd and Suzuki Motorcycle India Pvt Ltd -- have been on strike since yesterday afternoon.

Earlier in June, Maruti workers went on a 13-day long strike which affected the car manufacturer's profits. Shares too have taken a hit amid a slowdown in sales, appreciating yen and now the workers' strike at its Manesar plant, which has sent production schedule for the Swift, one of its best selling cars, for a toss.

Things don't look rosy for the car maker. The auto giants shares have slipped near 11% in the last three months, underperforming the BSE Auto Index, which is down 5% during the same period. Its sales have been on the declining path for the last few months. Total sales in August fell near 13% year-on-year to 91,442 units, while sales over April-August are down 8%.
